1928-P Peace Dollar

Rank 1 is the lowest business-strike mintage in the series. Mintage is what the Mint produced, not what survives: the Pittman Act recoinage that created this series melted silver dollars in the hundreds of millions without recording dates, and later melts and hoards moved the numbers again.
Reading the figure
It is the smallest of the 10 Philadelphia issues in the series. Of the 1,992,649 struck across all mints in 1928, this issue accounts for 18%. San Francisco struck 4.5 times as many that year. The 1928 split ran San Francisco 1,632,000 and Philadelphia 360,649. The series median is 1,939,000, so fewer than half as many of these were struck as a typical date. Series-wide output fell that year: 1,992,649 against 2,982,900 in 1927. 1928 was the 2nd smallest production year of the 10 in the series. In 1928 the coin was struck at Philadelphia and San Francisco; Denver struck none.

- The median is the middle sale after removing outliers. The range is every sale kept, including the outliers, so you can see how wide the market actually is.
- Grade drives most of the difference. A band with three sales tells you far less than a band with thirty, and the count is shown so you can weigh it.
