Barber Half Dollar Dates & Mintmarks

All 73 issues of the series, 1892 through 1915, the largest of the three denominations that carried Charles Barber's design. The series closes with three consecutive years of very low Philadelphia mintages, the 1914 lowest of all at under 125,000.

No prices, price guides, or population counts appear anywhere in this catalog. Coin Curator does not hold licensed data for any of those, so it publishes none. How we work.

Rank 1 is the lowest business-strike mintage in the series. Tiers are assigned from reported mintage alone: under 750,000 struck is a key date, under 2,500,000 a semi-key. The same thresholds apply to every series on this site, so tiers are comparable between them. That is a production measure, not a market judgement, and not a statement about how many survive.

Common questions

How many Barber half dollar dates and mintmarks are there?

73, struck at Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans and San Francisco. New Orleans stopped striking coins in 1909 and Denver only opened in 1906, so no single mint covers the whole run.

Who was Charles Barber, and why is one design on three denominations?

Barber was the Mint's chief engraver. The Mint had run a public competition to replace the Seated Liberty design and found the entries unsatisfactory, a judgement Barber himself helped reach, and his own design was adopted instead. It was then applied to the dime, quarter and half dollar together, which is why the three series share a span and a look.

Where do these mintage figures come from?

They are U.S. Mint production records, cross-checked on 2026-08-02 against three published tables. Two of the three report proofs separately and agree on every issue; the third adds that year's proofs into its Philadelphia figures on all twenty-four proof years. This catalog reports business strikes and shows proofs in their own field.

Does Coin Curator publish Barber half dollar values?

No. This catalog carries U.S. Mint production figures, historical context, and documented varieties. It does not publish prices, valuations, price guides, or population and census counts, because Coin Curator does not hold licensed data for any of those. Pages link to the grading services' own certification lookups and to marketplace searches so you can check current evidence yourself.
