American Silver Eagle: Modern Bullion Investing
Launched 1986. The most-purchased modern bullion coin in US history. Trades near spot for common dates, but key dates and high-graded proofs unlock significant premiums. The full investing roadmap.
The Setup: American Silver Eagle (ASE) is 1 oz of .999 fine silver. Most common dates trade $35-45 (spot + small premium). Graded examples — especially PR-70 proofs and early MS-70 strikes — unlock 5-50x premium over melt.
ASE Categories
Bullion Strikes (1986-present)
Mass-produced, sold by US Mint to authorized dealers in bulk. No mint mark. Trades near spot for common years. MS-69 + MS-70 graded examples earn modest premium.
Proof Strikes (1986-present)
Mirror-finish strikes in collector packaging, mint mark on reverse. PR-69 trades $80-150; PR-70 trades $200-1,400 depending on year + variety.
Burnished / Uncirculated
2006+ collector variant with matte finish. SP grades. Modest premium over bullion.
Special Editions (Reverse Proof, Enhanced, etc.)
Limited issues: 2006-W Reverse Proof, 2011-S Anniversary Set, 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof (10K mintage, $5K+), 2021 Type 2 first-strikes, etc. Some of the strongest moves in modern numismatics.

Practical Investing
- For bullion exposure: Buy raw ASEs in bulk from APMEX/JM Bullion. 4-8% over spot. Sell at any coin dealer for near melt.
- For numismatic upside: PCGS-graded MS-70 first strikes ($120-250 over melt). PR-70 proofs of common years ($80-200 premium).
- For aggressive upside: Limited-mintage proofs (1995-W, 2019-S Enhanced, 2021 Type 2 First Strike). Higher risk + capital, but 10-30x returns possible.
- Avoid: Cherry-picked-from-tube "privy mark" novelty issues. Modern fakes flooding eBay (verify cert numbers).
