Bust Half Dollars (1807-1839): Affordable Vintage

Bust Half Dollars offer an approachable path into early American silver, supported by a specialist community that documents die varieties.

The series: Capped Bust Halves were minted from 1807 through 1839. Availability and market context vary by date, grade, surfaces, and Overton attribution, so verify the exact coin rather than relying on a series-wide range.

Series Sub-Types

Capped Bust, Lettered Edge (1807-1836)

The classic Bust Half. John Reich design. Lettered edge reads "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR". ~30 different dates, hundreds of die varieties cataloged by Al Overton in 1967.

Capped Bust, Reeded Edge (1836-1839)

Smaller diameter, reeded edge instead of lettered. Christian Gobrecht redesign. Lower mintages, semi-key dates. 1836 reeded edge is rare.

Why Bust Halves Are Compelling

  • Early federal silver. Compare circulated examples across dates and surfaces before selecting a type coin.
  • Deep variety scholarship. The Overton books catalog every die marriage. "Cherrypicking" rare varieties from common-date material is an active hobby, like a treasure hunt.
  • Aesthetic appeal. The Capped Bust design is gorgeous in high grade, flowing hair, elegant eagle. Even circulated coins have character.
  • Active community. Bust Half Nut Society (BHNS) is one of the most active numismatic specialty clubs.

Variety Premium Examples

Some Overton varieties attract materially different demand from common die marriages. Verify attribution and current records directly:

  • 1817/3 Overdate, compare the certified attribution with non-overdate examples in the same grade and transaction period.
  • 1828 Curl 2, Square Base 2 (Overton-117), verify the minute numeral differences with a specialist reference.
  • 1834 Large Letters Reverse, separate die variety, modest premium

Storage & handling

Bust halves are die-variety territory: a 10x loupe and the Overton attribution habit can reveal details a broad date listing misses. Store them in inert Saflips or Air-Tite capsules, never PVC. See our collector gear guide →
